March 28, 2013 - It was like the scene from a movie, yet for Doctor Georgi Litov, and his little disabled dog, Borko, it was a nightmare that had become a reality.
Dr Litov is the local doctor of the village Selcha (Селча), municipality of Devin, district of Smolyan in southern Bulgaria.
The doctor is being vilified in his village because he helps the poor stray dogs. On the 12th of March, a mob was sent to Dr Litov's home, accompanied by a film crew from the TV station TV7, owned by Alegro Capital of London. Little Borko, a little crippled dog that Dr Litov has rescued about one year ago, was attacked and beaten in his own garden. This lynch mob and the media staged this shameful act in order to force Dr. Litov out of his home and work, only because he is helping the strays in the village, where there is no vet and no shelter. The news article in no way criticized the mob for their actions, they only blamed Dr Litov for helping strays.
Adding insult to injury, Dr. Litov and his family are being evicted and bullied out of their home, and even their town. Nothing has been done to help the kind-hearted family who has only tried to help those less fortunate.
Please read the sad story on our website and please speak up for little Borko and his daddy, Dr Litov, by signing the petitions.
March 27, 2013 - Even those who are not Christians can recognize that the Easter holiday is intended as a celebration of life and rebirth. Unfortunately, many choose to celebrate this holiday by consuming the flesh of animals and each year at this time millions of lambs, sheep and goats are killed to provide these grisly feasts.
March 26, 2013 - Italian organisations - NOT THE POPE - call on people not to eat lamb at Easter!
In a press release, the Italian associations for the protection of animals and the environment (Enpa, Lav, Oipa, Leidaa, Lega del cane, Marevivo) issued a statement -- which had (due to a misinterpreted Google translation of an article published at LaPress.it) unfortunately and wrongfully been attributed to Pope Francis I -- calling on Italians not to eat lamb at Easter.
March 23, 2013 - Are RODEOS cruel? --- You decide!
March 23, 2013 - Mutton Busting is both child abuse and animal abuse!
Of all the things you can do with a toddler, “mutton busting” just might be the weirdest. The sport is about as simple as it is obscure: Take willing kids, age 6 and under, strap a hockey helmet to their heads, put them on the backs of live sheep and see how long they can hang on.
The vast majority of children participating in the event fall off in less than 8 seconds.

“At the end of the day it’s about personal property rights or the individual right to privacy,” ALEC spokesman Bill Meierling told the AP. “You wouldn’t want me coming into your home with a hidden camera.”
March 19, 2013 - China river's dead pig toll passes 13,000 but officials say water quality is 'normal'
March 14, 2013 - More than 20,000 Green Sea Turtles are being killed in Bali each year under the disguise of "ritual slaughter"
The trade in green sea turtles remained a $1 million business despite a law enacted by the Indonesian government in January 1999 making it illegal to catch, possess or eat the animals. In Bali, local officials created a huge loophole by allowing hunters to catch 5,000 green sea turtles a year. In practice, this meant there was no limit on the number caught because the quota was never enforced. Despite the loophole being repealed, Bali's inhabitants slaughtered more endangered sea turtles than anyone else in the world, bringing the species ever closer to extinction.
Please take a moment to speak up against the illegal slaughter of endangered Green Sea Turtles in Bali by signing 2 petitions!
March 10, 2013 - EXCELLENT NEWS: Norway fund dumps palm oil holdings!!!
Norway's $US710 billion sovereign wealth fund has pulled out of 23 Asian palm oil companies after accusing them of causing deforestation, winning praise from environmentalists.
It said it sold stakes in the firms after a review of companies that have cleared forests for palm oil plantations in Malaysia and Indonesia. Palm oil is used in many foods and consumer goods such as soaps, lipstick and peanut butter.
The fund is one of the world's biggest investors, underpinned by Norway's oil and gas assets. Last year it expanded its investment guidelines to include deforestation as a threat to future growth
March 9, 2013 - Slaughterhouse workers are more likely to be violent, new study shows
March 7, 2013 - Slovenian media reported that the National Assembly yesterday adopted a new animal protection law that prohibits wild animals in circuses in the future. Slovenia thus would be the fourth country in the EU, that has put an end to the exploitation of non-domesticated animals in circuses.
March 6, 2013 - Please sign OfA's petition to the EU calling for the implementation of an animal abuser registry!
March 5, 2013 - Sign the EU-citizens Initiative to Stop Vivisection! The European citizens' initiative is not just a petition, it's something more powerful that allows one million EU citizens to participate directly in the development of EU policies, by calling on the European Commission to make a legislative proposal. Please see the website of the European Commission for more information: http://ec.europa.eu/citizens-initiative/public/welcome
The EU-citizens-Initiative 'Stop Vivisection' gives citizens the opportunity to say NO to animal experimentation and urges the European Union to take into consideration a different scientific approach, geared to protect human beings and animals' rights.
'Stop Vivisection' urges the European Commission to abrogate directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes and to present a new proposal that does away with animal experimentation and instead makes compulsory the use - in biomedical and toxicological research – of data directly relevant for the human species.
Please take a moment to sign this very important initiative at: http://www.stopvivisection.eu/

March 3, 2013 - The Salburun is a two-day traditional hunting fest that has been held annually since 1997 in the area of Issyk Kul lake in Kyrgyzstan, in Central Asia - usually on the 1st of May. The program of the festival includes falconry, hunting with taigan, archery, and ambler races, including a very gruesome and barbaric part referred to as "wolf baiting" during which a wolf is tied to a pole in an open field with is mouth tied shut. The defenseless animal is then attacked by eagles, falcons or trained hunting dogs - it is a gruesome battle to the death that almost invariably never ends in the wolf's favor.

February 18, 2013 - Masrya's journey to a better life... It took Dina and her team more than 7 months of hard work and many headaches to get Masrya from Cairo to Holland - from a life in a cage that was so small that she could barely move in there, to her new life at Stichting Leeuw where she will meet friends, and spend the rest of her new life.
February 16, 2013 - While some schools teach their children to love, respect and even to help animals in need, Peasenhall Primary School in England teaches children just the opposite! This school intends to rear 3 pigs that will be sent to slaugther.
Please take a moment to call or write to Peasenhall Primary School to let them know that a classroom or such an environment really is not a suitable environment for young and growing animals. Please tell them that what they intend to do sends the wrong message to young and impressionable children about how we should treat those who differ from ourselves and that there are many healthy and tasty animal free alternatives to sausages and meat in general.
February 13, 2013 - Some of the United States are still in the dark ages and kill shelter dogs and cats in barbaric gas chambers. An extremely painful and terrifying suffocation death used back in the Nazi days to exterminate many at once. A practice considered too harsh for our worst serial killers. Yet they kill adoptable, innocent cats and dogs this way. Take action against gas chambers - sign the White House Petition NOW! .
February 12, 2013 - When the Spanish hunting season ends end of February, thousands of dogs will face a horrific death!
Every year, thousands of Spanish hunting dogs (Galgos and Podencos) are abandoned, abused, or even killed in horrific circumstances. The absence of laws regulating the breeding of these dogs, and the poor enforcement of animal welfare laws, means that at the end of hunting season (February) thousands of 'excess' dogs are 'disposed' of by their owners -- and thousands of dogs will suffer again this year unless we demand action now.

The fund is one of the world's biggest investors, underpinned by Norway's oil and gas assets. Last year it expanded its investment guidelines to include deforestation as a threat to future growth
