Chrisanthos Spiliotopoulos is the name of the man that last Wednesday witnessed and reported a horrible crime of animal abuse.

Passing by Peristeriou Avenue in Salamina, with his car, this man heard two gun shots, and the next thing he witnessed was a man shooting for the third time, a dog, to finish him off, while that dog was trembling and writhing, and crying and streaming from the pain the bullets had caused him.

The killer, who is retired of the Hellenic Navy, was annoyed because the dog, epaniel in race, entered his garden through an opening in the fence! He did not hesitate for not even a minute and executed the poor dog with 3 bullets in front of the eyes of his young son! Trying to give him the “good” example!

Nantia Zombola, president of the animal welfare of the volunteers in Salamina, explained that, this particular dog was a stray, but it was taken cared by Z.O.E.S. the animal welfare mentioned above, and by a neighbor of the killer, who provided him food every day.

The animal had never shown any kind of violent behavior towards anybody, since there were people looking after him and taking care of him, so there is no excuse for the hatred that this murdered showed, and even worse in front of the eyes of a young child! As it was known for the retired naval, who doesn’t seem to honor his uniform at all, there were suspicions of him poisoning (and killing painfully) the stray animals of the area in regular basis. Those suspicions were confirmed to be true, with the worst way unfortunately. 

The abuser, who was arrested yesterday, today was presented to the Public Prosecutor so that the charges would be announced to him, but his trial was postponed because of the legals’ strike, for January 16, at 13:00.

It was known that his attorney – who does not support the strike of the legals! - was fully ironical towards the animal lovers and all those who fight for the animal rights … In fact he was shocked that we made it a big issue saying “why are you acting like this? it's just a dog!”  adressing of course to the animal lovers who were shouting to his client: “shame on you!”. 

The abuser in his apology, after accepting his animal killing charges, and admitting that he did kill the dog, said that he was afraid for his son's life and that this was the reason for doing what he did! His wife also faced the animal lovers with even worse irony than their attorney.

Mrs. Zombola informed us that the police will pressure the criminal to reveal where the body of the poor dog is, since he made sure to discard it immediately, so the members of Z.O.E.S. can proceed to his burial. After his handcuffs were taken off of him, he was led to court room for a while, before he was set free so he would avoid safely the angry animal lovers gathered outside! 

The irony of those who face the crimes against the animals and the animal abusers lightly not only will not pass on Monday, but it will turn against them once more. The animal lovers renew their appointment for once again outside the court of Piraeus!

Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident of animal abuse, instead we are talking about a phenomenon that occurs extremely often, all over Greece, but in the area of Salamina lately has increased dangerously. Having in mind all the researches that proved that animal abusers rarely stop at the abuse of an animal, we consider that man to be even more dangerous than one would think… now it was a dog, tomorrow it could be his child. And since we all considered that Greek laws don’t apply to animal abusers but fortunately that seemed to change to the last incident with the man of Albania origin that sledgehammered the dogs in Mosxato, who was severely punished, 

we demand

the Maximum Penalty for the accused, making him an example for all animal abusers who commit so terrible crimes, in Greece and especially in the problematic area of Salamina.
