On December 23, 2011 at 10:30 am, on 69 Miaoulis Street in Moshato, near Athens, a man of Albanian nationality - known by the authorities not only for abuse of animals but also for violence towards members of his family - tried to kill three dogs hitting them with a sledgehammer and iron bars.
The man lured the dogs with food inside a fenced yard and, wielding a sledgehammer, proceeded to smash two of the dogs on the head. The third dog managed to escape before the door was shut. The remaining two, Rigas and Duke, were victims of his unspeakable brutality.
The dogs' screams brought people to their windows and doors. The man’s reply to the numerous shouts from witnesses begging him to stop was that he would do the same to them if they intervened. One brave woman called the police. Upon their arrival, the man had thrown one of the dogs, Rigas, in a garbage bag and was on his way to finish off the remaining dog, Duke.
The man was apprehended and the dogs were quickly transferred to a doctor.

Τη Δευτέρα δικάζεται τελικά ο εγκληματίας, που προσπάθησε να κοπανίσει τρία σκυλιά, και τελικά τσάκισε στην κυριολεξία τα δύο από αυτά με σιδηρολοστό, επειδή κυνηγούσαν μια κότα! Το έγκλημα συνέβη χθες 23/12 στις 10:30 το πρωί στην οδό Μιαούλη 69 στο Μοσχάτο.
Εκεί ο ψυχοπαθής άνδρας αλβανικής καταγωγής, που έχει απασχολήσει και στο παρελθόν την Αστυνομία, για την κακοποίηση ζώων, αλλά και για την επιθετική συμπεριφορά προς την ίδια του την οικογένεια, επιτέθηκε στα ζώα, στριμώχνοντας τα σ’ ένα περιφραγμένο οικόπεδο.
Σήμερα το μεσημέρι ο δράστης – αφού στο μεταξύ είχε συλληφθεί – κατά την προσαγωγή του στον εισαγγελέα στα Δικαστήρια της Ευελπίδων, έγινε θύμα στα χέρια εκείνων, οι οποίοι του επιτέθηκαν και τελικά τον ξυλοκόπησαν αγρίως με αποτέλεσμα να μεταφερθεί στο νοσοκομείο φρουρούμενος.
Παραμονές Χριστουγέννων αρκετοί πολίτες, που έμαθαν για την αγριότητα του, πήγαν στα Δικαστήρια για να διαμαρτυρηθούν για την απανθρωπιά του, αλλά κάποιοι πήραν τον νόμο στα χέρια τους.
Έτσι αντί ο εισαγγελέας να αποφασίσει αν έπρεπε να προφυλακιστεί ή όχι, ο δράστης τελικά μεταφέρθηκε με ασθενοφόρο του Ε.Κ.Α.Β. στο νοσοκομείο και εκεί νοσηλεύτηκε φρουρούμενος, εξαιτίας του ξυλοδαρμού. Η αστυνομική δύναμη, που υπήρχε εκεί, δεν επαρκούσε, ώστε να σταματήσει εκείνους, που τον λιντσάρισαν.

Η Μαρίνα Τελή από τον Φιλοζωικό Σύλλογο Αγίου Ιωάννη Ρέντη μόλις ενημερώθηκε για το έγκλημα την περασμένη Παρασκευή έσπευσε επί τόπου για να δει τι έχει συμβεί και περιγράφει το τι έζησε: «Αυτόπτες μάρτυρες κατέθεσαν στην αστυνομία ότι είδαν τον Αλβανό να προσελκύει με τροφή τρία ζώα, σε περιφραγμένο οικόπεδο, το ένα εξ αυτών πρόλαβε να φύγει τη στιγμή που έκλεινε την πόρτα.
Στη συνέχεια άρπαξε σιδηρολοστό και άρχισε να τα χτυπάει τα δύο σκυλιά με σκοπό να τα σκοτώσει. Από τα ουρλιαχτά των άτυχων ζώων οι κάτοικοι τις περιοχής βγήκαν στα μπαλκόνια.
Έντρομοι, αντικρίζοντας το μακελειό του φώναζαν να σταματήσει και εκείνος απαντούσε μπείτε όλοι μέσα για να μη σκοτώσω και εσάς. Μια περαστική κυρία με το γιο της, που είδε της σκηνές βίας, κοντοστάθηκε στο συρματόπλεγμα του οικοπέδου και το παιδάκι της κυρίας του φώναζε, “σταματήστε κύριε μη τα χτυπάτε, θα τα σκοτώσετε, τι σας έκαναν τα ζωάκια”, εκείνος του απάντησε, “φύγε από εδώ γιατί θα σκοτώσω και εσένα”.
Αυτός συνέχιζε να τα χτυπάει ξανά και ξανά, χωρίς οίκτο, χωρίς συναίσθημα, χωρίς ανθρωπιά, με μοναδικό στόχο να τελειώσει αυτό που άρχισε, αδιαφορώντας τον κόσμο που τον κοιτούσε έντρομος.
Το ένα ζωάκι από τα δύο είχε σχεδόν υποκύψει στα χτυπήματα, είχε πέσει κάτω, το χώμα γύρω του είχε βαφτεί κόκκινο και στη τελευταία προσπάθεια του να ανασηκώσει λίγο το κεφάλι του, του έριξε άλλη μια στο κεφάλι και το άφησε αναίσθητο. Ο Αλβανός πήρε μια από τις σακούλες, που είχε ετοιμάσει, το έβαλε μέσα και πήγε στην αποθήκη, το άφησε εκεί και πήγε για να αποτελειώσει το επόμενο. Εκείνη την ώρα ήρθε η Αστυνομία και τον συνέλαβε.
Οι αστυνομικοί αμέσως εντόπισαν το ένα ζωάκι, που ήταν αιμόφυρτο στο οικόπεδο, δεν είχε χάσει τις αισθήσεις του αλλά εμφανώς καταβεβλημένο. Μετά από ώρα άκουσαν κλάμα από το αποθηκάκι αμέσως άνοιξαν την πόρτα και είδαν μια σακούλα όπου κουνιότανε, την άνοιξαν και πετάχτηκε από μέσα το ζωάκι το οποίο έχει πάθει πολύ μεγάλη βλάβη.
Δεν πετάχτηκε επειδή ήταν καλά, πετάχτηκε επειδή ήταν μισοπεθαμένο και οι πόνοι του δυσβάστακτοι, αφού του είχε ραγίσει το κρανίο του και του είχε σπάσει τη γνάθο. Τα ζωάκια μεταφέρθηκαν γρήγορα στο γιατρό, τους προσφέρθηκαν οι πρώτες βοήθειες. Το ζωάκι που είναι βαριά τραυματισμένο το κρατούσαμε τέσσερις άνθρωποι, γιατί τιναζότανε διαρκώς από το σοκ που υπέστη, είναι σε κώμα και δυστυχώς δεν έχει καμιά βελτίωση.Το άλλο το ζωάκι που είναι σωματικά καλύτερα, όμως το τραύμα τις ψυχής του είναι ζωγραφισμένο στα ματάκια του, έτρεμε ολόκληρο και έβαζε αντίσταση στη προσπάθειά μας να τον μεταφέρουμε, μας είπε ο γιατρός, ότι έχασε την εμπιστοσύνη του απέναντι στους ανθρώπους και θα χρειαστεί καιρό για να συνέλθει.
Πρέπει αύριο να κρατήσουμε όλοι την ψυχραιμία μας για να καταδικαστεί. Πρέπει να σημειώσουμε ότι το αφεντικό του Αλβανού απείλησε όλη τη γειτονιά και φοβέρισε τους γείτονες να μην μιλήσουν! Τους είπε πως δεν θα έπρεπε να λυπούνται, για ό,τι συνέβη, γιατί απλώς ήταν δύο σκύλοι.
Δεν έχω λόγια να περιγράψω τις εικόνες που αντίκρισα, ένιωσα αρκετές φορές να χάνω τις αισθήσεις μου, άλλες τόσες φορές μου ήρθε να κάνω εμετό, το κεφάλι μου πονάει ασταμάτητα λες και μου το χτύπησε με τη βαριοπούλα, που χτύπησε τα δόλια τα ζώα». Όπως έγινε γνωστό ο δράστης θα επικαλεστεί ότι τα ζώα του επιτέθηκαν και έχουν καταθέσει τρεις δικοί του ψευδομάρτυρες. Όμως ο Φιλοζωικός Σύλλογος Αγίου Ιωάννη Ρέντη έχει μαζέψει ήδη υπογραφές από τους γείτονες, οι οποίοι εξηγούν ότι τα ζώα είναι πολύ φιλικά και ποτέ δεν πείραξαν κανέναν».
Ο ένας από τους δύο σκύλους, που είναι πολύ βαριά τραυματισμένος, με ραγισμένο κρανίο και σπασμένη γνάθο, δεν ξέρουμε αν τελικά θα τα καταφέρει. Νοσηλεύεται σε κτηνιατρείο. Ο δεύτερος σκύλος φιλοξενείται από φιλόζωο της περιοχής.

The dogs' screams brought dozens of people to their doors and windows....the Greek boss of the Albanian screamed at them that the same would be done to them if they intervened. Only one woman was brave enough to call the police and agreed to later testify in court. Tragically, RIGAS, the most severely injured dog, lost his battle for life on 30 December at 7.30pm. A CT scan showed that a piece of his skull bone lodged itself in the brain.
Fortunately this case of animal abuse will at least reach the face of justice because a BRAVE woman had the guts to call the police and not stay inactive to the cruelty before her eyes.
Unfortunately this is not the case for a large number of abused animals in Greece and elsewhere in the world!
Let unfortunate Rigas be the reason YOU speak out when you see an animal being abused!

Ένας άντρας αλβανικής καταγωγής παρέσυρε 3 αδέσποτα σκυλιά σε ένα περιφραγμένο οικόπεδο και προσπάθησε να τα σκοτώσει με βαριοπούλα και σιδερολοστό. Ένα από τα τρία, κατάφερε να ξεφύγει καθώς η πόρτα έκλεινε, ενώ τα δύο που παρέμειναν έγιναν θύματα απίστευτης βίας. Παρά τις όλες προσπάθειες σωτηρίας τους, το ένα σκυλί, που βρέθηκε σε κωματώδη κατάσταση, αργότερα πέθανε καθώς ένα κομμάτι του κρανίου είχε σφηνωθεί στον εγκέφαλο του.
Οι συνθήκες διαβίωσης των ζώων στην Ελλάδα καθώς και οι φρικτές περιπτώσεις κακοποίησης τους , που τόσο συχνά γίνονται αντιληπτές στην παγκόσμια κοινότητα φιλόζωων , ήδη έχουν αρχίσει να αυξάνουν τις παγκόσμιες εκστρατείες και διαμαρτυρίες της ενάντια στις κτηνωδίες που γίνονται στην χώρα σας, και ο λόγος που σας γράφω είναι γιατί πιστεύω πως ήρθε επιτέλους η ώρα να πάρετε στα σοβαρά τις περιπτώσεις των κακοποιήσεων αυτών. Η παραμέληση και κακοποίηση των ζώων στην Ελλάδα δεν είναι απλά ένα «περιστατικό». Είναι καθημερινό φαινόμενο !
Ο άνθρωπος που διέπραξε το αποτρόπαιο αυτό έγκλημα πρέπει να τιμωρηθεί πολύ αυστηρά και να φυλακιστεί όχι μόνο επειδή κακοποίησε βάναυσα τα σκυλιά , αλλά επίσης επειδή – σύμφωνα με δημοσιεύματα Ελληνικών εφημερίδων- είναι γνωστός στις αρχές για την βίαιη συμπεριφορά του απέναντι σε μέλη της ίδιας του της οικογένειας , γι αυτό το λόγο λοιπόν αναμφισβήτητα αποτελεί απειλή για την κοινωνία ως σύνολο.
Σύμφωνα με έρευνα του SPCA (Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) και του North-eastern University το 1997, αυτοί που κακοποιούν ζώα έχουν πενταπλάσιες πιθανότητες να βιαιοπραγήσουν εις βάρος ανθρώπων , και τετραπλάσιες πιθανότητες να διαπράξουν εγκλήματα κλοπής, σε σχέση με αυτούς που δεν έχουν ιστορικό κακοποίησης απέναντι στα ζώα.
Πολλές μελέτες στην ψυχολογία, την κοινωνιολογία και την εγκληματολογία τα τελευταία 25 χρόνια, έχουν αποδείξει πως οι βίαιοι εγκληματίες συχνά έχουν στο ενεργητικό τους διαπράξει εγκλήματα κακοποίησης ζώων περισσότερες από μία φορά. Το ίδιο το FBI, υποστηρίζει τις έρευνες της δεκαετίας του 1970, καθώς το προφίλ των κατά συρροή δολοφόνων που συνέταξε, αποδεικνύει πως οι περισσότεροι από αυτούς είχαν σκοτώσει η βασανίσει ζώα στην παιδική τους ηλικία. Άλλη έρευνα έχει δείξει πως συνεχόμενες πράξεις κακοποίησης στα ζώα δεν είναι παρά προπομποί των γνωστών τύπων βίας, μεταξύ των άλλων παιδική κακοποίηση η ενδο-οικογενειακή βία, και κακοποίηση τρίτης ηλικίας.
Σε κάθε πολιτισμένη χώρα του κόσμου , ένα έγκλημα τέτοιας αγριότητας θα ήταν καταδικαστέο και ο εγκληματίας θα λάμβανε αυστηρότατες ποινές. Σε ένα κράτος , μέλος της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, αυτός θα έπρεπε να είναι ο κανόνας, η ιστορία όμως μας έχει διδάξει πως στην Ελλάδα αυτό είναι μάλλον απίθανο να συμβεί.
Έχοντας επίγνωση των Ελληνικών νόμων 1197/1981 και 3170/2003 και των διατάξεων τους αναφορικά στα ζώα συντροφιάς και την προστασία των αδέσποτων ζώων, καθώς και των ποινών που προβλέπονται στην περίπτωση παράβασης τους και λαμβάνοντας υπ όψιν και το γεγονός πως η Ελλάδα έχει επικυρώσει την απόφαση της Ευρώπής σχετικά με την προστασία των ζώων το 1987, βάση του νόμου 2017/1992, απαιτούμε αυστηρότατη ποινή για τον κακοποιό , την οποία δικαίως αξίζει , έτσι ώστε να δείξετε στον κόσμο πως οι προαναφερόμενοι νόμοι παίρνονται στα σοβαρά από τις Ελληνικές Αρχές και δεν βρίσκονται μόνο στα χαρτιά.
Η Ελλάδα είναι μία πολύ όμορφη χώρα, την οποία αγάπησα κατά τις επισκέψεις μου στο παρελθόν και είμαι πολύ στενοχωρημένος/η που πρέπει να σας πω πως αν δεν δω βελτίωση πάνω στην εφαρμογή των νόμων σας περί προστασίας των ζώων και βελτίωση της κατάστασης διαβίωσης τους στην χώρα σας, να είστε σίγουροι πως δεν πρόκειται να την υποστηρίζω ούτε πάνω στο τομέα του τουρισμού, ούτε του εμπορίου πλέον και θα απαιτήσω από και τους φίλους και την οικογένεια μου να κάνουν ακριβώς το ίδιο.

One dog managed to escape before the door closed, the two remaining dogs have become victims of his incredible violence. Despite all efforts to save him, one of the dogs, who was in a coma when he was finally found, later died because a piece of his skull bone lodged itself in his brain.
The plight of animals in Greece and the horrific cases of animal abuse that regularly come to the attention of the global community of animal lovers have already led to increased world-wide information campaigns and protests against the atrocities that are being carried out in your country, and the reason I am writing to you is because I believe that it is about high time that cases of animal abuse are being taken seriously in Greece. Neglect and abuse of animals in Greece is more than a 'phenomenon'. It's a daily fact of life!
The man who committed these crimes needs to be severely punished and locked away because he is not only a very brutal animal abuser but - according to Greek newspapers - he is also already known by the authorities for violence towards members of his family and is therefore undoubtedly a threat to society as a whole.
According to a 1997 study done by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and North-eastern University, animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than are individuals without a history of animal abuse.
Many studies in psychology, sociology, and criminology during the last 25 years have demonstrated that violent offenders frequently have histories of serious and repeated animal cruelty. The FBI has recognized the connection since the 1970s, when its analysis of the lives of serial killers suggested that most had killed or tortured animals as children. Other research has shown consistent patterns of animal cruelty among perpetrators of more common forms of violence, including child abuse, spouse abuse, and elder abuse.
In every civilized country in the world, a crime of such brutality would be prosecuted and the abuser severely punished. In a country, member of the European Union this should be the rule, but history has shown us, that in Greece it is very likely that this will not happen.
Knowing that the Greek laws 1197/1981 and 3170/2003 which comprise regulations both for companion animal welfare and for the protection of (stray) animals and provide for penalties in case of infringement and that Greece has ratified the European Convention for the protection of pet animals of 1987 by law 2017/1992, we demand that the abuser gets the severe punishment he so rightly deserves, and thus showing the world that the mentioned laws and convention are being taken seriously by the Greek authorities and do not only look nice on paper.
Greece is a very beautiful country that I have loved to visit in the past and I am very saddened that I have to tell you, that - until I see serious improvements in the implementation of your animal protection laws and the animal situation in Greece - you can be assured that I will not support your country via tourism or commerce any more and that I will ask my family and friends to do the same.

Ο άνθρωπος που διέπραξε το αποτρόπαιο αυτό έγκλημα πρέπει να τιμωρηθεί πολύ αυστηρά και να φυλακιστεί όχι μόνο επειδή κακοποίησε βάναυσα τα σκυλιά , αλλά επίσης επειδή – σύμφωνα με δημοσιεύματα Ελληνικών εφημερίδων- είναι γνωστός στις αρχές για την βίαιη συμπεριφορά του απέναντι σε μέλη της ίδιας του της οικογένειας , γι αυτό το λόγο λοιπόν αναμφισβήτητα αποτελεί απειλή για την κοινωνία ως σύνολο.
Σύμφωνα με έρευνα του SPCA (Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) και του North-eastern University το 1997, αυτοί που κακοποιούν ζώα έχουν πενταπλάσιες πιθανότητες να βιαιοπραγήσουν εις βάρος ανθρώπων , και τετραπλάσιες πιθανότητες να διαπράξουν εγκλήματα κλοπής, σε σχέση με αυτούς που δεν έχουν ιστορικό κακοποίησης απέναντι στα ζώα.
Πολλές μελέτες στην ψυχολογία, την κοινωνιολογία και την εγκληματολογία τα τελευταία 25 χρόνια, έχουν αποδείξει πως οι βίαιοι εγκληματίες συχνά έχουν στο ενεργητικό τους διαπράξει εγκλήματα κακοποίησης ζώων περισσότερες από μία φορά. Το ίδιο το FBI, υποστηρίζει τις έρευνες της δεκαετίας του 1970, καθώς το προφίλ των κατά συρροή δολοφόνων που συνέταξε, αποδεικνύει πως οι περισσότεροι από αυτούς είχαν σκοτώσει η βασανίσει ζώα στην παιδική τους ηλικία. Άλλη έρευνα έχει δείξει πως συνεχόμενες πράξεις κακοποίησης στα ζώα δεν είναι παρά προπομποί των γνωστών τύπων βίας, μεταξύ των άλλων παιδική κακοποίηση η ενδο-οικογενειακή βία, και κακοποίηση τρίτης ηλικίας.
Σε κάθε πολιτισμένη χώρα του κόσμου , ένα έγκλημα τέτοιας αγριότητας θα ήταν καταδικαστέο και ο εγκληματίας θα λάμβανε αυστηρότατες ποινές. Σε ένα κράτος , μέλος της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης, αυτός θα έπρεπε να είναι ο κανόνας, η ιστορία όμως μας έχει διδάξει πως στην Ελλάδα αυτό είναι μάλλον απίθανο να συμβεί.
Έχοντας επίγνωση των Ελληνικών νόμων 1197/1981 και 3170/2003 και των διατάξεων τους αναφορικά στα ζώα συντροφιάς και την προστασία των αδέσποτων ζώων, καθώς και των ποινών που προβλέπονται στην περίπτωση παράβασης τους και λαμβάνοντας υπ όψιν και το γεγονός πως η Ελλάδα έχει επικυρώσει την απόφαση της Ευρώπής σχετικά με την προστασία των ζώων το 1987, βάση του νόμου 2017/1992, απαιτούμε αυστηρότατη ποινή για τον κακοποιό , την οποία δικαίως αξίζει , έτσι ώστε να δείξετε στον κόσμο πως οι προαναφερόμενοι νόμοι παίρνονται στα σοβαρά από τις Ελληνικές Αρχές και δεν βρίσκονται μόνο στα χαρτιά.
Η Ελλάδα είναι μία πολύ όμορφη χώρα, την οποία αγάπησα κατά τις επισκέψεις μου στο παρελθόν και είμαι πολύ στενοχωρημένος/η που πρέπει να σας πω πως αν δεν δω βελτίωση πάνω στην εφαρμογή των νόμων σας περί προστασίας των ζώων και βελτίωση της κατάστασης διαβίωσης τους στην χώρα σας, να είστε σίγουροι πως δεν πρόκειται να την υποστηρίζω ούτε πάνω στο τομέα του τουρισμού, ούτε του εμπορίου πλέον και θα απαιτήσω από και τους φίλους και την οικογένεια μου να κάνουν ακριβώς το ίδιο.

A man of Albanian nationality has lured three homeless dogs inside his fenced property and tried to kill them with a sledgehammer and iron bars. One dog managed to escape before the door closed, the two remaining dogs have become victims of his incredible violence. Despite all efforts to save him, one of the dogs, who was in a coma when he was finally found, later died because a piece of his skull bone lodged itself in his brain.
The plight of animals in Greece and the horrific cases of animal abuse that regularly come to the attention of the global community of animal lovers have already led to increased world-wide information campaigns and protests against the atrocities that are being carried out in your country, and the reason I am writing to you is because I believe that it is about high time that cases of animal abuse are being taken seriously in Greece. Neglect and abuse of animals in Greece is more than a 'phenomenon'. It's a daily fact of life!
The man who committed these crimes needs to be severely punished and locked away because he is not only a very brutal animal abuser but - according to Greek newspapers - he is also already known by the authorities for violence towards members of his family and is therefore undoubtedly a threat to society as a whole.
According to a 1997 study done by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and North-eastern University, animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people and four times more likely to commit property crimes than are individuals without a history of animal abuse.
Many studies in psychology, sociology, and criminology during the last 25 years have demonstrated that violent offenders frequently have histories of serious and repeated animal cruelty. The FBI has recognized the connection since the 1970s, when its analysis of the lives of serial killers suggested that most had killed or tortured animals as children. Other research has shown consistent patterns of animal cruelty among perpetrators of more common forms of violence, including child abuse, spouse abuse, and elder abuse.
In every civilized country in the world, a crime of such brutality would be prosecuted and the abuser severely punished. In a country, member of the European Union this should be the rule, but history has shown us, that in Greece it is very likely that this will not happen.
Knowing that the Greek laws 1197/1981 and 3170/2003 which comprise regulations both for companion animal welfare and for the protection of (stray) animals and provide for penalties in case of infringement and that Greece has ratified the European Convention for the protection of pet animals of 1987 by law 2017/1992, we demand that the abuser gets the severe punishment he so rightly deserves, and thus showing the world that the mentioned laws and convention are being taken seriously by the Greek authorities and do not only look nice on paper.
Greece is a very beautiful country that I have loved to visit in the past and I am very saddened that I have to tell you, that - until I see serious improvements in the implementation of your animal protection laws and the animal situation in Greece - you can be assured that I will not support your country via tourism or commerce any more and that I will ask my family and friends to do the same.

At date of 09/01/2012, the murderer of Rigas has been sentenced to maximum penalty ... and so much more than we could ever have hoped for!
9 months prison without suspension plus € 2.000,- fine and € 3.000,- as indemmification to animal lovers, threatened and insulted by him.
In order to avoid imprisonment he has to pay 8.500 euros.
This is a big step for Greece towards the end of animal abuse! Many thanks at all who spoke out for Rigas and so have contributed to make this possible.
